Biography: 1755-1827 Harvard 1777 Studied law in Newburyport under Theophilus Parsons. Admitted to the bar 1780. 1783: Elected to be Newburyport's representative at General Court. 1784: Elected to Continental Congress. Sponsored bill to not allow slavery in new territories. 1788 Moved to New York 1789 Elected to US Senate. 1796-1803; 1825-1826 U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain. Federalist; ran unsuccessfully for vice president in 1804 and 1808.
