Transcription:Essex Ss. George the Third by the Grace of God of Great Britain France and Ireand, King, Defender ofthe Faith Etc. To the Sheriff of our County of Middlesex, his Under Sheriff or Deputy….Greeting We Command you that you Summon Samuel Taylor of Reading in our County of Middlesex, Cordwainer (if he may be found in your Precinct) to appear before our Justices of Inferior Court of Common Please next to be holden at NewburyPort within and for our said County of Essex, on the last Tuesday of September instant. Then and there in our said Court to answer unto Casar a Negro man of Andover in our County of Essex Leather dresser, in a Plea of Trespass for that the said Taylor at said NewburyPort on the first Day of June Anno Domini 1770 with force & arms assaulted the said Casar & him imprisoned & detained & kept in Slavery from the said first Day of June to the ninth Day of September instant & other Enormities to him then & there did against our Peace Etc. to the Damage of the said Casar as he saith the Sum of two hundred Pounds, which shall then and there be made to appear, with other due Damages. And have you there this Writ with your Doings therein. Witness Nathaniel Ropes Esq. at Salem this ninth Day of September, in the Seventh Yea of our Reign Annoque Domini 1771. Joseph Bowditch Clerk Endorsed Casar Mark X his Witnes Nathaniel Peaslee Sargeant Middlesex for September the 10th 1771 By Virtue of this Writ I summoned the within named Samuel Tayler to appear and answer to this Writ according to the Tener thereof by reading the same to him Wm Peirce Dept Sheriff Reverse page The Said Samuel comes & defends Etc, and says he is not guilty as the Plaintiff declars & thereof puts himself on the Country. pr.
