- Dated Nov. 12, 1771. Sworn, signed testimony by Moses Hart that at September ECCP Court, he heard Samuel Taylor talking with others and Taylor said that Casar had "paid him almost all the money" for his liberty but he sold Casar for a loss because he thought Casar "did not conduct so well" and he had been advised to sell him. The reverse side contains a statement from Salem [Poor] that he heard this conversation as well and it had happened as Hart had said. Citation: Samuel Taylor vs Casar, Superior Court of Judicature June 1772, 15. Suffolk # 132190.
Transcription:From SCJ Records Casar vs Taylor 1771 Suffolk #132190 I Moses Hart of lawful Age testify that at Newbury Port at September last (being Court Week) Samuel Taylor of Reading Cordwainer was Standing by the Door of the Court House in said Newbury Port, with several people round him, who were talking about Casar (whom said Taylor claims as his Servant) his suing for his Liberty. Casar was there present, & told said Taylor that he said Casar had paid him almost all the money he had agreed to pay him for his LIberty (which said Taylor did not deny). Taylor answered if he had, yet he said Taylor had got nothing by him, for he had sold him for a good deal less than he gave for him. Afterwards, some of the people being withdrawn, I asked Taylor if it was as the Negro had Said. Yes, says Taylor, he has paid me the most of the money but he has nothing to Show for it. And I sold him for a good deal less than I gave for him, I have paid a good deal of money for him, I have got nothing by him. Said Taylor told me that he had agreed that Casar should have his LIberty, & for that Casar was to give him six hundred pounds in six years. I asked him why he sold Casar before the time was out. He replied that he [cross outs] thought Casar did not conduct so well, & he was advised to sell him. He, said Taylor, also said that he had sold Casar two or three years before the time was out, for Casar’s paying the money.
